After a video leaked on the internet of Lafayette City Court Judge Michelle Odinet and her family using violent language and racial slurs, she has released a statement asking for “understanding, forgiveness, patience, and prayers” for her and her son. The video which caused the calls for her to resign depicts Odinet and her family watching a security footage of a burglary that took place at their driveway on Saturday.

In the video, two unidentified female voices speak, the first one saying, “And mom’s yelling n*gger, n*gger,” to which the second voice replies, “We have a n*gger, it’s a n*gger, like a roach.” Lafayette City Marshall Reggie Thomas put out his own statement in response to the video, in which he says, “As a proud Black man, and the Lafayette City Marshal, I strongly believe Judge Odinet should be held accountable.”

He went on to say, “I’m sure that people of color will find it impossible to trust that they will be treated fairly and equally when they have to stand for judgment before Judge Odinet. […] It is up to Judge Odinet to remember the oath she took, and should she remain on the bench, find a way to gain back the trust of ‘all’ of Lafayette, especially African Americans.”

The video is not well-recorded enough to see who exactly is saying what in the video, and no information has been revealed as to who it was that recorded or leaked the video. When defending herself over the situation, Odinet claimed that, “The situation highlighted and confirmed a suspected substance abuse issue our son is having.”

Whether or not her son is suffering from addiction is not excuse for racist behavior, which was also pointed out by Sen. Gerald Boudreaux, who commented that the situation was “reprehensible, offensive, and unacceptable. […] We have struggled miserably to garner public support for our judicial system at every level in this country.”
