Harry Reid was a respected figure by many during his time in the U.S. Senate, and despite today’s deep political divide, he helped bring positive change wherever he could. At age 82, Reid passed away on Tuesday, and it has become very clear from the many statements released that he succeeded in having a positive effect on many of those he interacted with.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell released a statement saying that despite the fact that he had often come into political conflict with Reid, which was sometimes intense, what matters most is the fact that the Senator always did what he truly believed was right. A reporter from New York Times, Jonathan Martin, even managed to find an old note from Donald Trump to the Reid, from a time before Trump embraced his infamously narrow-minded conservative narrative.

Reid had the note hanging in his Vegas office that he kept after leaving the Senate, and in Martin’s words, it was “a nice note from a donor after Reid’s last win, in 2010.” While it’s hard to imagine Trump putting financial support behind a liberal candidate, he not only did that, but he even wrote him a personal note with the words, “Congratulations- you are amazing!”

Another anecdote that many are recalling is how Reid is known for being one of the people who initially encouraged Barack Obama to run for president and having a big role in convincing him to do so, which really proves how representatives who are truly there to serve the people can be admired by everyone, no matter which way they lean.
