The Professional Golf Association of America runs, well, professional golf. (The U.S.G.A. handles the rules and golf generally). The PGA is akin to your state’s bar for attorneys. One must qualify to be a PGA member. Yes, most of it is by demonstrating a mastery of the game, but it goes beyond that to knowing the rules, knowing how to teach golf, and most professional golfers are not on television. They are at your local course, as the professional who helps manage the course and teaches lessons.

The PGA also runs the golf “tour” in the United States, the tournaments can be found on your television on any given weekend. There are four “major” golf tournaments (recognized internationally), one of which is the PGA championship. The PGA Championship rotates through different courses in the United States every year. It probably goes without saying that they pick among the most exclusive and best courses.

The 2022 PGA Championship was to be played at Trump’s Bedminster, New Jersey club. As everyone would guess, these locations are chosen far in advance. The decision to play the 2022 tournament in Bedminster was made in 2014. But the decision not to play the tournament in Bedminster was made on January 16th of this year. Trump was livid.

He revels in this type of atmosphere, rubbing shoulders with “winners” and being seen as the king of the golf world. The decision shattered Trump and he promised to fight it. Despite the fact that there are very few groups that scream “MAGA” more than wealthy white golfers, the PGA is wealthy because it partners with corporate America and corporate America isn’t willing to partner with Trump. Trump lost his battle to retain the PGA Championship.

But somewhere there was a contract and – depending upon the contract’s terms, the PGA likely had to shell out some money. Where it gets hilarious is the “agreed upon statement” that the PGA had to release as part of the deal. One can tell it was likely written by Trump himself, then edited by someone literate:

The PGA of America issued the following statement:  “The Trump Organization’s contribution to the golf community is appreciated.  We are thankful the company employs hundreds of dedicated PGA Professionals and consistently gives back to the golf community through hosting charitable events and sponsoring junior golf programs. As stated in 2014 when announced, Trump Bedminster is a major championship-worthy golf course and in a portfolio along with some of the finest private and public golf courses anywhere in the world.”

Well, we are certainly glad to know that the Trump Organization’s involvement with golf is so noteworthy for its charitable events and junior golf programs, oh – and it’s one of the greatest courses in the world. The hilarious and sad part is that Trump tried to sell this as a “win” while still likely fuming that he’s been denied his right to host the event.
