Despite Texas’s reputation for being notoriously conservative, a recent story has revealed that a cop was fired because she was present at the January 6 Capitol insurrection and called it the best day of her life. This was reported by a local news outlet, KSAT, on Tuesday. Roxanne Mathai is a 47 year old Sheriff’s Lieutenant who was placed on administrative leave in January after she posted multiple times on her Facebook on January 6 showing herself at the Capitol building.
In June, she was fired by Sheriff Javier Salazar, but she took that decision to court and appealed it. Another news station that reported the story, CBS affiliate KENS 5, said that Mathai argued that because she never actually entered the Capitol Building, she was not technically part of the riots that occurred that day.
Sheriff Salazar did an interview with KSAT on Monday where he discussed Mathai’s multiple defenses, another of which was that she was simply witnessing a “historic event”, which Salazar called “ridiculous”. In response to this defense, the Sheriff said that, “It’s not like you’re standing there for the signing of the Declaration of Independence.”

In the end, the arbitrator upheld Salazar’s decision and Mathai was officially fired from her position as Lieutenant. Neither the Sheriff’s office nor Mathai’s lawyer have responded to requests for comment from Insider. While Mathai did face the consequence of losing her job after her participation at the Capitol, she was not among those charged for being in attendance, and says that she was totally unaware of the violence that took place that day.
