There is a lot that needs to be reconsidered when it comes to higher education in the United States, namely, how much value one gets out of a $50K per year degree in sociology, or American history. What is not at issue is that education is “invaluable” and necessary. Some colleges might be a scam, Trump university comes to mind. Your local community college or state university, those are not “scams.” There may be problems that need to be worked out, they’re not scams.
The type of education found at these schools (and private schools, too – obviously) provide tools that one might need if one wants to teach English at a high school, engineer software that moves information between satellites more efficiently, put a catheter into someone’s arteries and open the vessel up to blood, or defend the 19-year-old black kid stopped by a cop and illegally searched with a couple of joints.
These careers aren’t for everyone, nor are they any more dignified than the work the cable guy does. But the types of careers above require a broader education that almost forces out a little bit of maturation, of the type needed to not be the next Madison Cawthorn.
Madison wants kids to drop out of college as he did. We agree. If kids have all Ds, drink all the time, and are accused of so many sexual assaults that your classmates write a letter recommending voters ignore you? You should drop out. From The Indepenedent:
Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn is taking flak for telling a crowd of fellow young conservatives to follow his example and abandon higher education.
Speaking at the multi-day “Americafest” conference hosted by Turning Point USA, a pro-Trump far-right youth organising group, the first-term North Carolina representative mused to his audience that “I think you should home school. I was homeschooled all the way through. I am proudly a college dropout.
“If you are not becoming an engineer or a doctor or a lawyer, I highly encourage you to drop out. It’s a scam.”
What about the guy that just wants to manage the bank efficiently? Shouldn’t he or she know how to write a letter in proper English, speak with a semi-decent vocabulary, etc? There is value in a broad education, we just have to make that value somewhat equate to salaries and tuition.
Have no doubt. Madison is covering here. From the research we’ve done, Madison was about to be forced out had he not “dropped out.” Madison is not some hero for figuring out the “scam.”
This country needs to reevaluate higher education and the cost per benefit basis, with much more effort on the “benefit” side. But that doesn’t mean that college itself is a scam. No, Madison Cawthorn is the scam. He wants people to think he was smart, he figured them out. Madison is dumber than a duck with chicken feet.
College dropout, Madison? It shows.
