While we celebrate the holidays and try to focus on the gifts we’ve been given (family, friends, love), let’s all pledge to try to remember two things. One, not everyone out there enjoys the holidays, in fact, for some people, it is the loneliest time because they simply don’t have any of the above, and yet it’s put in their face. Two, as much as things may seem somewhat “normal” while we enjoy the meals and gifts and warmth, nothing is normal and the world is a very dangerous place right now.
There are near 100,000 Russian troops on the border of Ukraine and that number is supposed to increase to 75,000 in two weeks. Putin is acting insane, undoubtedly on purpose, in a calculated manner. According to Russian expert and Obama’s ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul:
“I’ve listened to more Putin speeches than most. I’ve been in meetings with him for five years,” McFaul said of Putin’s remarks on Tuesday. “This speech is something different — Putin’s list of completely fabricated threats here is truly striking … and scary.”
NATO has recognized Ukraine as an aspiring member and thus NATO has some responsibility to help protect Ukraine (though not lawfully bound under Article V).
The U.S. should be putting immense pressure on Russia regarding the price it will pay should it attack Ukraine, including possible airstrikes and missile cover. (It is doubtful that this country, having just withdrawn itself from a war, has the stomach to put troops down in front of another army again).
Amazingly, and this will shock you (pffft), the most committed MAGAs are 100% against intervention at all. Perhaps they feel more loyalty to the ruthless k1ller, Putin, than fledgling democratic Ukraine. Indeed, that Ukraine is a democracy is the reason they may be attacked. There is no bigger threat to Putin than a democracy on his doorstep, indeed one that shares its culture with Russia.
Thus it is that the MAGiest of MAGAs want the U.S. to leave Russia alone. Madison Cawthorn went even further, to argue that we shouldn’t get involved because Russia would kick our ass. You see, we’ve been “playing in a sandbox” for decades, while Russia has developed high-tech stuff. It sounds like Cawthorn is a spokesperson for the Kremlin, odd – such a patriot. Why would that be?
Putin’s spokesman, Madison Cawthorn, delivered the Kremlin talking points on Ukraine today on Fox News: “We’ve been fighting in a sandbox and in caves for the last 20 years. Meanwhile, they’ve been creating hypersonic missiles that can sink our entire fleet in the Black Sea.” pic.twitter.com/McEF9Agk4B

There is obviously nothing amusing about this, but it is okay to note that – perhaps – ten (and no more) House representatives, truly know our latest military technology and ability. Cawthorn would be among the last ten to know anything.
Here is what we do know. Putin says he has hypersonic missiles that could sink carriers. But Putin says a lot of things. It is very possible that we have even better technology that we’ve held back. We definitely know we can launch a missile from a submarine in Puget Sound and have it hit the exact window that the military has targeted in Moscow. That ought to concern the Russians some.
It should also concern us that Madison sounds like he’s cheering for the ruthless dictator.
