In early December, Melania Trump announced that she will be selling an NFT, or non-fungible token, which has been met with some controversy, especially as NFTs themselves have been in the forefront of public discussion recently. The NFT she is selling is a watercolor of her eyes and it costs $150, in response to which an anonymous former Trump White House official has noted that Melania is just “trying to look busy.”

“This is not exactly using her platform for larger global or domestic impact,” said the source, who used to be part of Melania’s day to day life during her husband’s time as POTUS. Trump has announced that an unspecified “portion” of the proceeds from the NFT will go to “assist children aging out of the foster care system by way of economic empowerment and with expanded access to resources needed to excel in the fields of computer science and technology.”

The anonymous insider said that he was “confused” by the move, saying it was a very random choice and poorly timed as well. Despite the criticism from this official and many more online, there has been a second NFT announced already, which is scheduled to be released in January. In the past, former president Trump criticized cryptocurrency as a “scam against the dollar”, but now that his direct family is getting some quick cash, he seems to have quickly changed his tune.

The very least the general public can hope for is that a bit of the earnings will actually see a charity fund, but it seems unlikely considering her husband’s past records of getting fined for using money from his own charity to benefit himself politically. Still, the Trump family is used to controversy, and if they make a few bucks from this new “investment”, they’ll probably call it a success.
