One of the very guilty pleasures in covering politics at this point in American history is the task of reviewing and comparing-contrasting statements that are near mandated from every public official, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, the death of a prominent person, and, of course, today – Christmas.
The enjoyment comes from being handed evidence of Trump’s “issues” in a manner that would humiliate anyone with any self-awareness and be so obvious that it’s enjoyable to put side by side. From Fox News we have the last three messages (We are certain the Bush family, being quite religious, put out a spiritual and lovely statement too):
Start with the standard-bearer: Ex-President Barack Obama
“Merry Christmas, everybody! This year, I got a little help spreading holiday cheer from Sunny,” Obama said. “Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful holiday season with the ones you love.”

Of course, the president and the First Lady put out the quintessential, classic, White House Christmas greeting. Unoriginal, but perfect:
“From our family to yours, Merry Christmas! May your time with loved ones be filled with warmth, comfort, and joy this holiday season.”

There is obviously nothing exciting about the Bidens’ greeting. It’s what one could even call “cliche.” And yet that is also what one would call “presidential.” It is a cliche because that is what presidents do. It is perfect. But nothing more.
And now we get to Trump, this is the guy that invented the phrase “Merry Christmas” you will recall. Of course, he did so because his deeply held Christian faith had been offended by people leaving Jesus’s name unstated in their holiday wishes. So, quite obviously Trump was going to jump at the chance to not just say “Merry Christmas” but to also remind people that Jesus is the reason for the season and that Jesus himself said that above every other commandment, to “love one another.” Surely, his would be the longest and most eloquent…
“Merry Christmas to all. We will Make America Great Again!”

Sigh. The Christmas message a political ad. But, as noted above, it is so obvious and captures Trump’s “essence” to such a degree that it comes full circle to enjoyable.
