Jim Bob Duggar, the father of recently convicted child predator Josh Duggar of 19 Kids and Counting fame, is definitely not going to be in the Arkansas state senate anytime soon. One might think that having the most Arkansas-sounding name of all time should have helped, but it only got him 456 votes in total, less than a third of his opponent’s.

It actually would have been 457 if his own son-in-law had voted for him, but he endorsed Duggar’s opponent, Colby Fulfer, instead. That could be part of the rest of the clan’s attempt to distance themselves from Josh Duggar after his conviction, since his father supported him throughout the trial.

It also could be due to the fact that Jim Bob is a terrible candidate for dogcatcher, let alone in a seat of power.

His son-in-law Derick Dillard, who is married to Duggar’s daughter Jill, recently accused Jim Bob of being “manipulative” and “verbally abusive.” In a Facebook post just before the primary, Dillard wrote:

I used to have much respect for Jim Bob, as my father-in-law, and I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt for years. Unfortunately, it’s only become clearer to us over time just how deep this man’s manipulation and deceit will go for his own gain, at the expense of others.

Dillard’s wife Jill, sister to Josh Duggar, came forward in 2015 as one of four victims of her brother Josh’s inappropriate touching when she was very young. When Jim Bob testified in his son’s trial, his meager defense of Josh was that he “couldn’t remember” the details of Josh’s admissions about the events in 2005 and 2006.

Josh is expected to face sentencing in about four months, and he is facing around 20 years in prison and possible fines up to a quarter of a million dollars.

Why Jim Bob decided to run again for a state seat — he was a state representative before he was ever on reality TV — with the kind of cloud hanging over his family that he sees today is beyond comprehension.
