Blake Masters, a GOP Senate candidate from Arizona who has possibly the whitest name in America, can add another name to the litany of wealthy supporters he already boasts.
Backed by ultra-rich Trump supporters Peter Thiel and Rebekah Mercer, Masters is vying for the seat opening up in Arizona that’s currently held by Senator Mark Kelly. Astronaut-slash-Senator Kelly is the husband of Gabby Giffords, who barely survived a shooting at a speech she held years ago.
The gala event is coming up midweek and will cost nearly $3,000 just to attend. Those donors or couples who want a picture with the former president will need to shell out a whopping $25,000 in advance for the honor.
Although Trump has not officially endorsed a candidate in the Arizona contest, it’s likely because he wants to weigh his options; Arizona is a traditionally red state, and the Democratic candidates who won Senate seats there in the last two elections did so by small margins. Getting behind a weak candidate in what looks like a vulnerable state for Democrats could make Trump risk looking like a political hack.
Masters is currently leading the Republican pack in the primary contest for the seat. Soon-to-be-former Gov. Doug Ducey, who is being term-limited out of the governor’s mansion after his current stay is up, may join the fray.
The seat is important to Republicans, especially those from Arizona, since it’s the one that was held by former Senator John McCain, an icon of the US government and widely considered a war hero.
That could also explain some of Trump’s reticence to endorse in the contest. His longstanding feud with McCain, who opposed him on moral and ethical grounds, extended even beyond the cancer-stricken lawmaker’s 2018 death.
It is sure to be competitive, though. A huge growth in population in Phoenix, Arizona’s capital, has expanded the state’s Democratic voting base.
