Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s onetime closest confidant, had some choice words to say about the ex-president in an opinion piece he wrote for The Guardian on Sunday. Calling him “the ogre under the bed,” Cohen said that Trump himself will probably wind up securing a second term for President Biden.
Although Cohen pointed out many of the polling and popularity problems Democrats have faced over the last year, he also outlined the fact that the bad news stories that have hit Biden left and right since January are all things that will feel palpably different once they have improved: Food prices, the shipping crisis, and even the pandemic will all get better before too long.
And if Democrats are as successful with their social spending bill as they were with the bipartisan infrastructure package they just sent to Biden’s desk, they will be able to run on having cut childhood poverty, expanding Medicare benefits for the elderly and poor, and even paid family and medical leave for workers.
Conversely, the effects of Trump’s presidency are lasting, and not in the kind of way that benefits America. Support for the 45th President was lower on average for his entire presidency than for any president before him, and independent-leaning voters have just as sour a taste left in their mouths from the Trump years as Democrats do.
That’s what Cohen says will likely drive people to the polls.
Trump is likely to remain the gift that keeps on giving for Democrats — the living, breathing bogeyman under the bed who keeps their voters up at night. As much as Democrats may want to run on their legislative agenda, the spectre of Trump could be their most effective strategy for maintaining power and is probably Biden’s best hope for re-election.
Even without the spending bills that Democrats hope will get the economy back on track and alleviate some of the ills of the prior administration, it could once again just be enough to not be Donald Trump in November of 2024.
