Michigan Republican Fred Upton, a House member from the 6th District, just released the angry, profanity-laden voicemails he’s gotten since he voted with Democrats for the infrastructure bill.
Most of the GOP lawmakers who voted for the bill have been menaced by these calls after Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene publicly posted their names and phone numbers, calling them “traitors.”
That was the kind of language — and worse — that Upton heard in the recordings at his home. The Detroit News first posted the voicemails on their website, and they are not for the faint of heart.
A majority of the calls have come from those who are not even Upton’s constituents. That stands to reason since his own voters know why they elected him to office. Upton is a member of the “Problem Solvers Caucus,” a group dedicated to bipartisan legislation.
One such outsider from South Carolina left possibly the most disturbing message of all, hoping for Upton’s demise, as well as “everyone in your family” and “everyone in your staff.” The caller echoed Greene’s sentiment throughout:
A f**king traitor. That’s what you are. You’re a f**king piece of sh*t traitor … You f**king piece of sh*t trash motherf**ker. Voted for dumb*ss f**king Biden. You’re stupider than he is, and he can’t even complete a f**king sentence.
It’s not new to see angry right-wing voters come out swinging against anyone who steps out of line against their most conservative leaders. But the situation isn’t helped any by those leaders encouraging the behavior and even suggesting that they would be punished for voting against the interests of the Republican Party, as Mark Meadows suggested on Steve Bannon’s podcast recently.

Although Upton said he didn’t necessarily think he would face “consequences” from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy over the vote, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility for the Party of No.
