It is a Saturday on a long weekend and there will not be a lot of hard news made today, which is great – it gives all of us, readers – too, a chance to spread our wings a bit and think about some stuff that we normally don’t have time to consider.

A question was asked on Twitter today by some rather anonymous person, and it went viral, thousands of responses: “Which characteristic embodied by Trump supporters bothers you most?” It is relevant to our lives. It is not just voyeurism. This country is so polarized that one picks new friends along the lines of voting characteristics and many of us have lost a lot of old friends. So the question is more important than one might think at first.

It is also very interesting because there are characteristics that we wouldn’t have recognized until seeing them listed.

It is probably best to just start out with mine. On this one, I’m not speaking for the staff and so we’ll just go first-person and the most annoying thing to me is that they don’t even recognize that 5-6 years ago, they wouldn’t have invited the man into their homes, certainly not allow him around their wives or teen daughters. They’d have seen him as a selfish, loudmouthed, bragger, philanderer, one that cares about money above all else. They’d have hated him, they did hate him (Most). But, Trump hates liberals as much as they do, so Trump is obviously a great person and they uniformly overlook the obvious even when pointed out.

This is a sweeping generalization and one can easily find exceptions, especially in red states. But it is up because of the easily swayed by any rhetoric and our country is in the scourge of COVID because they lack common sense about vaccines.

They seem to have an overactive amygdala which might explain how easily they are triggered into a fear response which many exhibit. He triggers, they respond. They also seem to be attracted to authoritarian types even if that ‘authority’ has the intelligence of a turnip.

Absolutely. Evangelical Christians want to be ruled. The reasons are complex, but they certainly have a love for dictatorships and autocracy… Provided the dictator serves them well. Trump served them well and, at the same time, didn’t show one tiny bit of interest in their beliefs.

Above, a perfect one to end on – there are many more, just hit any one of them. Yes, with respect to deception, my favorite is that climate scientists are out to deceive them to get grand money, but the oil companies that have hundreds of billions on the line are playing it straight up. Trump was crushed for Trump University just as the campaign was winding down and he had owned a high rate escort service. But they believe him over scientists, journalists, European democracies, teachers (!), anyone associated with a college…
