There needs to be a distinction made between “Nothing surprises me anymore,” and the surprising manner by which Trump demonstrates his pathological self-obsession. We expect the bottom. We are continually surprised by the various outlets available on rock bottom. Trump retains a dark genius ability to navigate the bottom, looking for blood-red diamonds.

Trump and Don Jr. have agreed to provide “commentary” for a four-hour night of boxing, capped off by Evander Holyfield vs. Vitor Belfort match, all to occur on September 11th. It is probably worth stating that it’s beneath the dignity of the office for an ex-president to spend four hours talking about much of anything that doesn’t rise to the level of the office, never mind the atrociousness of 9-11. Of course, there’s the presidential standard and there is Trump.

While Trump and Junior get excited about the “Me-ness” of it all, the real president, Joe Biden, will function as a real president and attend a memorial. It wouldn’t surprise us if he is joined by ex-presidents George W. Bush and Obama. At the very least, both the Obama office and the Bush office will put out statements that will be beautiful, respectful, and more sincere than usual.  Trump’s office will put out a cliche that will almost surely reference himself.

Our friends at Rawstory phrase the outrageous with raw anger:

The twice-impeached one-term president will call the four-bout boxing match Saturday with his son Donald Trump Jr., as President Joe Biden plans to visit all three memorial sites of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

“I love great fighters and great fights,” Trump said in a statement. “I look forward to seeing both this Saturday night and sharing my thoughts ringside. You won’t want to miss this special event.”

No. We don’t want to see you at all. The general public has no obligation to sit at home and reflect that day, but an ex-president does have an obligation to the country to do something meaningful. Trump just spits in the country’s face, with all too much meaning, as per usual.
