Okay, so no one actually expected Trump to abide by the informal but rock-solid unwritten rule that ex-presidents don’t critique current presidents. To put it in ever simpler terms, the unwritten rule is that they practically disappear for almost a year, don’t even do much charity work. It is difficult running a democracy with a president because it “feels” like you have a ruler. If a former president stays visible and is talking about anything, it’s very difficult to put that “ruler” behind you. This is partly why MAGA is still so MAGA.
No one expected Trump to follow the rule. Some might have thought he’d cut back on it a bit after January 20th, and perhaps in his mind, he did, but no one expected him to follow it.
Regardless, there are still degrees of violation of the rule. A president could immediately launch straight into highly visible charity work, giving speeches, which would be awkward, again. The next degree up is talking about what you might have wished to have done. Next up would be criticizing the current president… and, the absolute worst, lowest of the low, say that something tragic involving the death of U.S. serviceman wouldn’t happen under your watch, that you had it “perfect.”
If anyone ever needed further evidence (and no one does), try to imagine what it has to take for someone to say that people would be alive today if only you were in charge. Short of “ordering” his MAGA military into action, post-presidency, which could still happen, those are the lowest words one could utter. And here he is, posted proudly this morning:
"We had it perfectly — perfectly — in control. We could have taken our time. It was after I got out with a Rigged Election, as soon as I got out [the Taliban] started taking over.

They didn’t have a plan. We have read and heard that from any number of people coming out of the administration. They had a plan to get the U.S. military out and no plan for civilians. This, of course, means you have no plan. The military has contingency plans for everything, there is a contingency plan for uprisings in Cuba, they always have plans made ahead of time. If they needed to be out of Afghanistan in 72 hours, they had a plan. But this was bigger and they had no plan to help any Afghans. The U.S. airlifted 122,000 people. They had a good plan.
Trump was nine days into his presidency when he ordered what is considered the most “botched” operation in recent history, an operation that Obama deemed to be too dangerous, that led to a SEAL Team 6 member’s death.
But he had it “perfect.” The lowest one can go.
