It is always tricky analyzing expert witness testimony for the simple reason that the nomenclature and underlying process can be confusing to those of us that are not experts in that field. What sounds like a lie may be true, what sounds obvious may be a lie. Try to imagine what it’s like for MAGA Senators and pure MAGAs to understand Dr. Fauci’s nuanced testimony.
After all, one has to be able to readily understand a paragraph such as the one below, which actually comes from an article in The Intercept that looks into grants that the U.S. gave to the Wuhan lab for research, while understanding the definition of a “humanized mouse.”
The second grant, “Understanding Risk of Zoonotic Virus Emergence in Emerging Infectious Disease Hotspots of Southeast Asia,” was awarded in August 2020 and extends through 2025. The proposal, written in 2019, often seems prescient, focusing on scaling up and deploying resources in Asia in case of an outbreak of an “emergent infectious disease” and referring to Asia as “this hottest of the EID hotspots.”
The far MAGA right (the people Doocy is always trying to please) believes that the grants prove that Dr. Fauci lied in his testimony to the Senate about grants for gain of function tests. Because the nuances are so difficult to understand, it is critical that a good press secretary be prepared for a question that they had to suspect would be asked. Psaki was prepared.
Psaki told Doocy, “Let me provide you some highlights of [Dr. Fauci’s statement]:”
“NIH has never funded research that would make the coronavirus more dangerous to humans. There are previous and different coronaviruses than the existing one we’re battling. And the body of science produced by this research demonstrates that the bat coronavirus’s sequences published from that work NIH supported were not the COVID-2 strain. So what he said was correct.
Doocy: “So [Fauci’s] job is safe?”
Psaki: “Correct.”
