A bombshell out today. A committee looking into a possible crime, a possible attempted coup, is subpoenaing the records from the leader of one of the parties in Congress.
Yesterday, Kevin McCarthy was not on the list. Today McCarthy is on the list of House members whose telecom records have been subpoenaed by the House committee. First the facts and then we’ll get to the speculation as to why. From Alternet:
House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s name is on the records preservation request list the House January 6 Committee has sent telecom companies.
McCarthy exploded in anger when news was first reported this week that the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack had asked the 35 companies to preserve records, which might also include location information.
CNN reports it “has received information that McCarthy’s name was, in fact, included along with several other lawmakers and hundreds of other individuals.” The Republican Minority Leader’s remarks were so outrageous some legal experts suggested they could be seen as amounting to obstruction.
So why would McCarthy’s name not be on the records’ preservation list yesterday and yet be one of, if not the, most prominent listed as they go out today? It is likely that the committee always planned on subpoenaing McCarthy’s records and his name wasn’t listed in the release yesterday, perhaps to get his reaction.
But there is one other possibility. Today, Nancy Pelosi named Liz Cheney as the second-ranking member on the committee, the second most powerful legislator involved. Is it possible that Liz knows something? She’s been in the GOP caucus a long time, she might have heard things. She is the one who told Jim Jordan, “You’re the one that f**king did this!” That sounds like someone who knows quite a bit.
Or, is Liz just getting a little payback on the man who kicked her out of her position as number three in her party, solely because of her belief that Trump did bear responsibility for January 6th.
Either way, subpoenaing the records of the leader of the opposition party is clearly unprecedented, a bombshell. It should get very interesting, too.
