Trump dropped a line onto Dan Bongino’s show on Saturday evening and it was so cluttered with inexplicable slop (Including the “Can you imagine if I had been president when this coronavirus surges…) that we have yet to really unpack some stuff that actually matters.
First, it matters that we know that Trump can always tell a lie big enough to cover his horrific failure. We have lost 618,000 Americans to COVID, we recall 240,000 as being the “worst case scenario if all the guidelines were followed.” The guidelines were not followed.
But don’t fret about that 618,000 because it’s almost nothing in comparison to the number of people Trump saved. He saved probably 100 million people, according to him:
“Schools have to open,” Trump told Bongino, because “young people are losing a big part of their life,” and it would “leave a psychological scar.”
Teachers should get the vaccine, he added, saying he was “very proud” of it and calling it something that “has been great for the world.”
“I think if we didn’t come up during the Trump administration with the vaccine, you could have 100 million people dead just like you had in 1917,” said Trump.
We colloquially refer to “the vaccine” as one thing, but given he’s taking credit as president, he really ought to acknowledge that there are four vaccines put out by American companies, we believe at least one British company, possibly Russian. It is also critical to add that having an ass-kicking vaccine does no good at all if you can only make 10 at a time. India doesn’t necessarily do development and testing, but their production facilities are unmatched, anywhere. Your vaccine was likely made in India.
So for Trump to be sitting there talking about “the” vaccine that “he” is very proud of because if “we” (the Trump administration) had not come up with it, 100 million people would have died is really disgusting. What an incredible loss.
1 We lose that number of people.
2 We lose the opportunity to say but that vaccine is a miracle because that’s what happens when the world drops its petty feuds and concentrates as one. It is a testament to science, to international corporation, to rich nations taking on a bigger burden. This was humanity’s endeavor and humanity produced a miracle that people should take.
What a missed opportunity. The only thing that the Trump administration did was rushed money and cut regulations on testing to help with the vaccine. It was the right thing to do, which is why every other government has done the same. Your local middle school has a student government. Upon hearing from doctors that they should change this rule and that, maybe save some money off sports this year, your middle school would have accomplished what the Trump administration accomplished.
The Trump administration didn’t “come up with the vaccine,” and that’s okay because the four American companies would still be putting the vaccine out, perhaps in Brazil or India, people with equal dignity. Had Trump not removed the red tape, the vaccine would’ve saved lives somewhere.
Trump always has trouble remembering that the U.K. was vaccinating people in their nation with their vaccine two weeks before we did. Perhaps Trump has trouble remembering the period because it came at a time when Trump worked extremely hard on dying of the disease
One hundred million. If we somehow end up losing one million Americans (and people are at the end of their rope with vaccinations), Trump will say that without him, we would have lost one billion people. He can always lie upward.
