This is not our first column on Sarah Huckabee-Sanders’ unanticipated crack on which she was supposed to skip along the golden bricks to the Governor’s mansion in Arkansas. That “crack” is now more like a chasm and his name is Christopher Jones, who is not the normal Democratic opponent in any race anywhere.
Unless you can find a politician who is both an ordained minister and someone sitting on the board of MIT with a Ph.D. in physics from MIT, and originally from Arkansas, wanting to run for governor in a state that Trump won by 30%, well – then there would be two of them. But we’ve only found one of these guys. Here is his first commercial as a reminder and this one went Viral with a capital “V.”
This last Sunday, Jones made an appearance on the Sunday show with Jonathan Chait, who asked the obvious, why such a smart guy who knows a lot of math would run for an office that would appear to have a negative 30% chance when it comes to Democrats versus Republicans. Like every other question that Jones may have been asked in life, he answered it rather easily. Because he can do it.
He said he’s running because Arkansas can do better, that their kids deserve better (let’s face it, what they’ve been trying this last 100 years hasn’t exactly worked out all that well). And he’s got a stake in how Arkansas does. When one has a Ph.D. from MIT – and is associate Dean, someone who has worked with NASA, and is head of Arkansas’ high-tech development organization, he could live anywhere he wants, and not just in this country. Yet he came back to Arkansas.
Did we mention he’s an ordained minister? Perhaps things like that shouldn’t matter but let’s face it, especially down south, it does.
We think we know why Sarah Huck went back to Arkansas, too, and that’s part of the problem. Sara represents some of the worst of Arkansas’ past, while Jones represents a hopeful future,
Will Jones win? It isn’t 50-50 yet, but we guarantee that Sarah’s blood pressure is a little higher than it might be. She probably anticipated facing a “normal” opponent. There is nothing “normal” about Chris Jones.
