Yesterday, we reported on an exchange that occurred between the usual intellectual heavyweight Jen Psaki and he hopelessly out-brained Peter Doocy in the White House press room over the use of the word Americans “stranded” in Afghanistan.
Psaki was certainly right to call Doocy out, saying use of the word stranded was “irresponsible” (she was extremely angry) because it’s pretty hard to be stranded if there are still flights with thousands of people per day out of the country.
Today they picked right up where they left off. But Fox News came with a twist. Knowing that Psaki pslapped Pete around a bit, Fox News managed to track down at least one American family purportedly trapped in their home (which is different than stranded) and interviewed them by phone, all so that Doocy could go back to his line of questioning:
“I know that you said yesterday it’s irresponsible to say that Americans are stranded in Afghanistan right now,” said Doocy. “What do you say to the American citizens in Kabul that Fox spoke to this morning? Her name is–she’s going by Fatima. She says, ‘We are stranded at home. For four days, three days, we didn’t hear anything from anywhere. Doocy also said that Fatima said she hadn’t been given “clear guidance.”
Psaki reiterated the White House’s commitment to getting Americans out of Afghanistan and said that the government has “reached out to every American citizen registered in Afghanistan directly multiple times.”
But did not address the “stranded” question, which Doocy followed up on.
“You say no Americans are stranded,” he noted. “This is someone in Kabul who says I am stranded. So, is there a better word for somebody who can’t leave the house to get to the airport because Jake Sullivan says ISIS outside the airport?
I would welcome you providing their phone number and we will reach out to them today,” said Psaki. “And I can assure you of that.”
Notice at the end, Psaki simply refused to take the bait and answer a question to which there is no “good answer,” it’s a classic “gotcha.” He wants her to give him a word that conveys their fear and desperation. So, like the professional she is, Psaki just batted away the question. This family was able to talk to Fox News, perhaps they should talk to the American government, see what happens? If such a family exists in the situation described?
