Who remembers a random Sunday night phone call between “President” Donald J. Trump and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan? Well, probably very few remember that the phone call happened. It is what occurred after the phone call that shook the world up. Near immediately afterward, Trump shocked his own National Security Staff with his decision to pull out of that border area around Iraq, Syria, and Turkey, the area in which the Kurds, our allies who fought alongside us, lived. Secretary of Defense Jim “Mad Dog” Mattis was mad enough to resign in protest.
Business Insider described the situation as it happened:
According to The Times, Trump “seemed to be responding instinctively” in making the decision after a phone call with Erdogan that was supposed to be focused on trade and defense assistance.
The Times reported that toward the end of the phone call Erdogan told Trump that he was moving ahead with plans to send Turkish military forces into northern Syria.
How many remember the fast withdrawal of all our Kurdish allies who had helped us fight ISIS over the years? No one remembers. Because it didn’t happen. The Kurds were left to get mowed down. We do remember the pictures, at least some of us do, hitting all of us parents hard:
Those forces have acted as a deterrent against long-standing Turkish threats to attack Kurdish forces who are part of the Syrian Democratic Forces and have been the US’s staunchest allies in the fight against the Islamic State in the country.
How many remember that Trump has two giant buildings in Istanbul Turkey? Everyone.
Normally, presidents sell all assets and put them in a blind trust for investment. There would be no question as to whether Trump’s two giant towers in the middle of Istanbul played a role in pulling our troops out immediately after a phone call with Erdogen, stranding our allies, and essentially surrendering to ISIS. Trump believed that simply letting his sons run the business (as if that would ever happen) alleviated all concerns about conflicts. No, the country worried a lot that a conflict brought about the inexplicable policy change.
We found one tweet, just a tweet, that sums up everything above and should shut the mouths of every single Republican saying a damned word, including the 30 committees that will be formed if the Republicans take back the House:
Hello? Anyone?
