Arizona Governor Greg Ducey became something of a hero to the left when he told Trump to get bent over his election demands. We still appreciate his honesty and dignity during the election, but he’s now earned the hammer for being so MAGA he will not let individual school districts make their own choices and his tool is far more harmful to districts than those in Florida and Texas. If a district institutes a mask mandate, that district will lose out on $1800 in federal funding per student.
A school district cannot maintain operations without that money. According to AZ Central:
Gov. Doug Ducey, apparently frantic that everyone is shrugging off his directives against COVID-19 mandates, has gotten the big stick out to whip some sense into rebel schools…
“District and charter schools that are eligible for a boost in per pupil funding must follow all state laws and remain open for in-person instruction to be eligible for their portion of the $163 million in total funding,” Ducey said on Twitter.
Key words here are that district and charter schools “must follow all state laws and remain open for in-person instruction.”
This is an affront to both the safety of the children and the law itself. As the article states, this is federal money and a significant amount. The federal government, as it is currently constituted, would rather make a go-around and send the money straight to school districts rather than hand it out to be hoarded by the state for draconian mask “unmandates.”
Parents have worked tirelessly over the past year and a half to keep their kids on track. They're in the driver’s seat, and it’s their right to make decisions that best fit the needs of their kids. 2/

It is difficult to conceive of what a parent is supposed to do – especially parents of children who are less than 12 years old can do about this to protect their children. Additionally, this would be a harder one to work around than even those instituted in Florida, which only withdrew the salary of the district superintendent.
This is insanity.
