Mary Trump, the woman who knows the Trump family from the inside out and with professional detachment as a doctor of psychology, says Trump will run in 2024, but we need not worry about a Trump dynasty because none of the kids have any charisma.

We aren’t in total agreement with Mary on this. We will get to why we think she’s at least a smidgen wrong after we set out her quotes from Business Insider:

“If you’d asked me if he’d run again in December, I would have said definitely not because he had just been humiliated and wouldn’t put himself in that position again,” she said. “But things have changed.”

She gave three indications as to why he would again run for president:

He is trying to rehabilitate his own image. He isn’t a loser, it was just a lie and he clearly won in a landslide. Everyone knows, there’s no need for proof, it’s just a fact among the right. Second, the coup wasn’t that bad, in fact, it’s mostly the media’s fault for making such a big deal out of it. The media and the deep state are out to get the MAGA movement again. Last, she points to the laws passed in state after state making it easier for Republicans to win.

We are in total agreement that all three are happening. We don’t think that adds up to the rationale that Trump is running in 2024. He needed to rehab his image in order to get people to send him free money again – the best part of politics, for a guy like Trump. So he has to act like he’s running anyway. The Big Lie was always going to be a big lie because he’ll go to his grave saying he won. He can’t live any other way, that would make him a loser.

Second, as to January 6th, the entire Republican party is on trial on that one. They know damned well that if the real truth comes out, not only are some of them going to jail, they might be finished as a party. We know this because there’s no other reason that Republicans went from a fury in the days after the riot to now protecting the party like a baby. There’s a reason. Third, the Republicans were going to be passing laws, even if Trump died the next day. They can read demographics and know that there will never be another Republican president again unless they make the world safe for minority rule.

She also says that there will be no dynasty because the kids have no charisma. We laugh. A year ago we laughed when people talked about Ivanka running against Rubio. Anyone who has ever heard Ivanka give a public address knows she’s not running for anything. It is less about charisma than it is about a woman who’s spent her entire life, shaping herself as the shapely-pouty-breathy-every man fantasy, and suddenly she’s going to be asked to look and act like a serious leader and policy wonk. It won’t work.

The only one with a chance is Junior because he speaks MAGA better than dad at this point. Junior immersed himself in MAGA culture. But still, Junior never ran a business, never ran anything. The first job in which he is the head of the organization will not be “President of the United States.” Junior needed to go out and run for governor of Wyoming or Idaho, and then maybe made his move. It won’t happen now.

As Mary says:

“The only thing you can really say about Donald is that he does have a kind of charisma that appeals, apparently, to … people in this country,” she said. “There’s nobody else on the right who has that charisma, and certainly none of his children.”

To a certain extent, we agree, though we’d watch Junior very carefully about leadership in other positions.
