As we have reported in the last two days, amounting to every day this week, the reliable battle between Peter Doocy and Jen Psaki has heated up. The back and forth used to be a bit sillier with Doocy clearly out of his league. Doocy is still just as clearly inept in his continuing attempt to get the gotcha question, but given the serious circumstances regarding Afghanistan, the battle has taken on a chilly, angrier tone. Doocy seems to think he’s asking tough questions, when in fact, he’s asking stupid questions.

Today’s question was somewhat more legitimate – but still, not professional and clearly a rookie attempt, and Psaki’s answer was as warm as a slushy.

To set it up, earlier today and at the end of an event, NBC’s Peter Alexander asked Biden, “What will you do if Americans are still there after the deadline?” Biden laughed slightly and said, “You’ll be the first person I call.”

Was that the best answer? No. But it didn’t fit Doocy’s question. From Mediaite:

“At the tail end of the president’s remarks, he was asked about Afghanistan,” Doocy noted. “He made a joke. So what’s so funny?”

We sit in awe that Psaki didn’t say. She did not say, “He was laughing at Peter Alexander for believing he’d give away secret military plans to you, as the first person he’d call, you stupid f’ing tourist!” Nor did she say, “He was laughing because of the pace of withdrawal and we will get to that point when we get to that point! And yet he wanted an answer now!”

But alas, Psaki answered like a professional, though an angry one:

Should Kamala Harris Run for President in 2028?

“Well, I think the question he was asked … was about when he will provide information about a decision on August 31, I think what he conveyed is that — well, what I can convey from here, I should say, is that as he stated yesterday … is we’re on track to complete our mission by August 31. Obviously, there are discussions, and the president received a briefing just this morning.”

We just noticed something. Psaki didn’t tell the White House press the answer to their contingency plans a week in advance, either. In fact, Psaki has clearly been out of the loop on the contingency plans, thus she cannot lie to the press. She said “he” had a briefing that morning and that they’re on track. To the extent there are contingency plans, they will not be announced from the White House Press Room.

And the third round goes to Psaki. Doocy knew that Biden wasn’t laughing about the situation and didn’t find the situation funny. He found it funny that a reporter would ask him to give up U.S. military plans a week ahead of time. Doocy thought he had a gotcha question. Psaki can’t get got.
