If you ever get the chance to drive through the very southwestern portion of South Dakota and the very northeest portion of Wyoming (admittedly, you really gotta wanna be there, because it’s not “on the way” to anywhere), you are in for a treat. Gorgeous high desert forest on the side of rolling hills rap around ribbons of rivers until you hit Wyoming and then you hit isolated but very very high mountains, not ranges, so much as one or two mountains. It is stunning, especially in late August or early September, just as fall is thinking about starting.
Basically, no one has ever heard of the area, “Sturgis, South Dakota” is the closest thing to a national name and it is famous for one thing, the annual motorcycle rally held every summer in early summer. And we do mean every summer because they didn’t take a year off last year.
We don’t know much about the political leanings of the average biker in your area and it would be incredibly unfair to pin the MAGA label on all of them. What we do know is that the type that shows up to Sturgis is not the type that worries about COVID and that boils down to basically one type of person nowadays. Take a look at this picture and tell us if anything really stands out, other than the very handsome faces that are in FULL VIEW:

Good times. And we sort of mean that. Not all of them are going to be real political in regular periods and there’d be some good people there. But how does a group like that – and remember, these are people who are not “just” from all over the nation, but people who will be driving back, and stopping at various points throughout the nation (as opposed to Obama’s guests who will get back on their Lear and land at home.)
This is the delta-variant super spreader event. Even those who are vaccinated can get a mild form of the disease (ask me all about it) and pass it on to others, and then bounce around communities that are identical in their beliefs.
But Fox talked about Obama’s 600 people, invitation-only, big precautions taken, mostly vaccinated crowd, all week, while this awaited.
And the band played on.
