We are sorry.
Certainly, Merrick Garland knows more law than we know tic-tac-toe and has far better judgment, at least usually. But there is increasingly disturbing information out there that requires the announcement of a special DOJ task force, assigned to investigate and prosecute any crimes resulting from the period after the election to the end of the impeachment process.
One place we would naturally begin our investigation is with two women who seemed to anticipate something bigger than speeches on January 6th. “Today is 1776!” as Lauren Boebert wrote, sounds to us like a declaration of independence and the start of a war. MTG wrote something similar the night before.
Now people are interested in a highly unusual tour, Lauren Boeberrt gave to select people in late December through the Capitol. Remember, at the time of this tour, Lauren was no more a member of Congress than any of us: From Rawstory via Salon:
There are several unanswered questions about this visit, which appears to have violated normal Capitol protocol in various ways. It’s not clear who authorized it, since Boebert was not yet a member of Congress and had no official standing in D.C. It’s perhaps even stranger that it occurred on a Saturday night, when the Capitol complex is closed. Later, in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 attack, Boebert repeatedly denied rumors that she had offered “reconnaissance tours” to would-be rioters shortly before that event. But her ambiguous comments appeared to avoid any specific discussion of this unexplained December tour.
According to materials reviewed by Salon, the Dec. 12 tour led by Boebert involved various parts of the Capitol complex, including the staircase in the Senate’s empty Brumidi Corridors, Senate room S-127 and the Senate briefing room, as well as the then-vacant Capitol Rotunda.
We can certainly see why a new representative would want to show family around, but there were many more there than just family. And if one was just elected to the House, wouldn’t that person want to focus on the House side and the chambers that person would be using? Why would she be showing them the Senate corridors? The Capitol is massive.
And why would she lie about it?
Boebert’s guests were clearly enjoying themselves, as can be seen in the photos. But everything about their presence on the observation deck alongside a Capitol Police officer remains unexplained. As mentioned above, the rules for observation deck tours stipulate that a member of Congress and an official guide must accompany each group that climbs the Capitol Dome. There’s no indication that either a member or a guide was present on this occasion.
Again, why would she lie about it? Consciousness of guilt?
Attorney-General Garland, it is time. It is time, it was time a while ago, but it’s especially time now. Democracy itself was almost overthrown. Perhaps Boebert is wholly innocent but that’s why you investigate. See if she lies to you about it.
