In case anyone has failed to notice, it is nearly the end of August and we don’t know much more about January 6th than we did on January 7th, except that it was far worse than it looked on live television. What little we do know comes primarily from private sources, newspapers, books, etc.

We have heard lots of stories of rioters in front of judges, we haven’t heard a thing explaining what the hell Roger Stone was doing talking to Proud Boy leaders in the days before, nor have we heard much about why the “White House” asked Alex Jones to lead the march up to the Capitol.”

We are furious with Merrick Garland and about to write him off altogether. It is increasingly apparent that he wants to prosecute bank robbers and slap 30 days on small-time criminals from the riot. But we learned that Bennie Thompson, head of the House investigation, would be subpoenaing phone records from certain members of Congress, a massive development. Today, legal experts Elena Honig and former Homeland Security Official Juliette Kayyem discussed the importance of the subpoenas.

Honig said:

“What they show is what cell phone number called to what other number when and for how long. And I think investigators need to look for two specific things here. One, was there contact between members of Congress or their staff and the people who actually rioted on Jan. 6th in the days and hours leading up to that? If so, what were you talking about and why? Two, were there communications between the staff and White House? [Kevin] McCarthy and Jim Jordan were in contact with Donald Trump. How many times? Who else? That will give Congress a road map of how they answer the questions.”

Correct. Build a network and then have them explain the network.

This is what was the extent of the conspiracy and was it as big as the 600 or 700 or 800 we anticipated were in the Capitol building at the time. If it’s much smaller, then who was directing it and that comes to members of Congress. So part of this is just sort of what is that narrative of how we got here?

“The other thing that is important. We still have to worry about this threat, and one way to undermine or to dissipate a terrorism threat is to make the terrorist organization look like losers. Like they can’t actually function. So, I really love what is going on now is because it is — you cannot have a winning team because that is how terrorists recruit and raise money.

We have to worry about the threat posed by our own government. Quite frankly, this is the first we’ve really seen of our own government taking action to learn what really happened that day. Perhaps Wray’s FBI is reporting to Garland daily and they have one of those old school boards with pictures and lines and are about to make arrests. But we seriously doubt it. Everything we’ve seen so far indicates that DOJ is focused solely upon the minnows that swam through the Capitol and not the sharks in deeper water.

This investigation might be our only hope for government accountability.
