One of the biggest difficulties courts face in dealing with Capitol rioters is that these are people who have contempt for the law and the federal government in the first place. After all, the judges within the federal government are the very same who denied Trump’s cases to begin with.

When they violate an order, they really violate it. According to WUSA9, Thomas Robertson now faces additional charges and these ones might be more serious than the original he faced. He purchased and stockpiled an arsenal of guns, thirty-seven – in direct violation of the judge’s order:

During a status hearing Tuesday, a federal prosecutor said the Justice Department expects to file additional charges against Thomas Robertson, a former Rocky Mount officer who was indicted with another officer, Jacob Fracker, on five counts in January in connection with the breach of the Capitol building,” reported Jordan Fischer, Eric Flack, and Stephanie Wilson.

The “former law enforcement officer” will hurt him when he next faces the judge. Judges, quite reasonably, expect officers, current or former, to understand the importance of following release conditions to the letter.

“Robertson, who had been on pretrial release at his home in Virginia, was ordered back into custody in July after the DOJ submitted evidence he had purchased 37 firearms and had them shipped to a nearby gun shop,” continued the Investigators interviewed the gun store owner, who said Robertson had visited the shop to handle several of the guns. They also obtained records of a Venmo transaction in which, they said, Robertson appeared to attempt to hide his purchase of a firearm by labeling the payment as being for ‘wedding photos.'”

So he decided he needed 37 new guns, initially sent them over to the gun store, but then went and visited his weapons? He would almost have been better off keeping them in his home, maybe not. But any pre-trial release is contingent upon demonstrating that one can be trusted to be safe out and among society.

Robertson is going to have a tough time.
