The Boston Globe reports upon their findings at the Family Leadership Summit in Des Moines, Iowa which has long been considered the first major event gauging GOP interest in the next election well ahead of time. The Globe reports that nearly every MAGA to whom they spoke believes that Trump won in 2020 but also wants to move on and leave Trump in the rearview mirror.
Despite there being a lot of praise for Trump, the report notes:
In interviews with 15 people at the conference, all of whom voted for Trump, none said they hoped the former president would run again…
“I agree with pretty much everything Trump did on policy as president, but I don’t think it would be good for him or good for the country if he ran again,” explained retiree Ken Hayes who admitted that he prayed daily for Trump.
… Ronald Forsell, the Republican Party chair in Dallas County, also wants to put 2020 in the rearview mirror, stating: “A lot of the people I’m talking to sort of realize that 2020 happened and we need to focus on 2024 if we’re going to get anything done, because worrying about the past isn’t going to help.”
Quite obviously, this event cannot possibly predict what will happen in 2024, all too many MAGAs, including Trump, still believe that 2020 can be reversed and we have already seen how much chaos Trump can invoke with his statements and plans. Additionally, this conference and these particular people were asked to focus on something that will happen well over two years from now. It cannot possibly mean that much.
It is still interesting. Due to the threats and noise coming from the most hardcore MAGAs, it often seems like Trump voters remain Trump voters and will again vote in blocs for him in the future. The 2024 election will likely occur with the new voting regulations in place to favor GOP candidates. So Trump and the MAGAs can often be seen and assumed as the obvious candidate in 2024.
Perhaps all that is wrong. The Globe’s findings are so much indicative as they are interesting and worth noting.
