“If you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of them, would you? Seriously, OK? Just knock the hell — I promise you, I will pay for the legal fees. I promise. I promise. They won’t be so much, because the courts agree with us too — what’s going on in this country.
“If you get hit in the face with a tomato, let me tell you, with somebody with a strong arm, at least, let me tell you, it can be very damaging,”
Donald Trump, embellishing a story, May 2016
Joe Biden was confronted with a heckler on Friday night while campaigning for Terry McAuliffe. We don’t understand the reference, but a guy started chanting. (From Mediaite):
“Stop line three! Stop line three! Stop line three!”
The audience responded by chanting “We love Joe, We love Joe,” but it was President Biden who responded perfectly:
“That’s okay. That’s all right. That’s all right. No, no, no, no. Let — let him talk. That’s okay. Look, this is not a Trump rally. Let them holler. No one is paying attention to them.
“Look, here’s the point: Virtually all the COVID-19 deaths and hospitalizations are today among the unvaccinated people.”
Biden moved on. The heckling continued and so did Joe: “And I know — I know this has gotten a bit politicized, but I hope it’s starting to change. It’s not about red states or blue states or guys like that hollering; it’s about life and it’s about death.”
The president of the United States is, in some way, supposed to embody the best of the United States. Sometimes they fail, they are human. But at the very least, they should respond as an adult. Obama said nothing after hearing “You lie!” in the SOTU. Joe did even better. He let the heckler know that he heard him and it didn’t bother him.
Perfect. Nice to have a good man as president again.
