Hey, Don, tell us again who wanted to “rig” the 2020 election?

According to Michael Wolff’s new book, the only time that Trump took COVID seriously was when it came time to consider the 2020 election and whether Trump might be better served putting the election off “for the benefit of the country.” Never mind that there is nothing in the Constitution that allows such a thing, indeed the Constitution sets out with exact specificity how elections must be held. Laws and constitutions never stopped Trump before. Additionally, Trump didn’t have problems with people filling churches.

According to Business Insider:

The excerpt said that in July 2020, Trump had been mulling ways of managing the pandemic without angering his largely anti-mask, anti-lockdown political base. Then, Wolff wrote, Trump brought up another idea: delaying the election over the pandemic. He later spoke of “calling it off,” the book said.

We don’t even want to think about what he meant when he went from “delaying” the election to “calling it off.” He may have been just saying “calling it off” from November of 2020, or he may have been saying calling it off until November of 2024. We know that Trump didn’t call rallies off.

Trump said “People can’t get to the polls. It’s a national emergency. Right?” Mark Meadows, then the White House chief of staff, stepped up to say that that was not a constitutional possibility.” Trump then said, “I’m sure there might be a way, but … well …”

Wolff said that Trump dropped it for a while, only to bring it up again weeks later. During debate preparation with Chris Christie, Trump said, “I’m thinking about calling it off.” Christie asked “The Debate prep?”

“No, the election — too much virus,” Trump was said to have replied. According to Wolff, Christie then told him, “You can’t do that, man,” adding: “You do know, you can’t declare martial law. You do know that, right?”

Christie could have also said, “You do know that they held the election in 1864, in the middle of the Civil War, when they did suspend habeas corpus and – for all practical purposes – did have martial law – right?

We did know that Trump was at least casually considering it. He tweeted in August: “It will be a great embarrassment to the USA. Delay the Election until people can properly, securely and safely vote???”

Or how about everyone just mail in the vote? What could possibly be safer, right Trump?

We know two things. Trump only thinks of his interests, ever. And, people who believe they’re ahead and likely to win an election never want it put off. Tell us about landslides again, Don.

Wolff has endured plenty of controversies before about the accuracy of his quotes and assertions, some of which weren’t even internally consistent, so one has to take this with at least that in mind… still…

Well, it sounds consistent with Trump’s tweet, and we do know that Trump always felt there was a way to do whatever he wanted. We suspect this is likely true.
