Governor Gregg Abbott believes he can find funding to complete the border “Wall” (It’s not a wall, it’s a fence) that Trump failed to finish. It is a little-known secret that “failed to finish” is incredibly charitable, given that the more accurate description might be “failed to really begin.” A study done by the GAO showed that Trump only completed 50 to 65 miles of new fencing along the 500 mile border (Depending on what one counts), the rest had already been fenced and merely got an “update.”

The Austin statesman knows that given the federal government couldn’t pay for the wall, nor organize its construction, the state of Texas surely can’t, either. Texas can barely keep the lights on. This is all about political posturing and they are tired of the rerun:

“How much would it cost? No one can say. The Texas border wall project manager that Abbott plans to hire is supposed to figure out costs and logistics, even as the governor is pledging action and tweeting video of land-clearing for a wall,” they wrote. “And we know that after spending $2.8 billion to replace existing barriers and build new ones in Texas, the Trump administration produced just 55 miles of new wall. Federal lawmakers said some portions of the Texas wall cost $26.5 million per mile. Abbott envisions ‘hundreds of miles’ of new border wall. You do the math.”

What kind of fence are they building?? We know people that will build a mile of fence for $13.25 million. Of course, none of this will ever be built. It is a political stunt, and the Statesman is sick of it.

Trump’s original campaign pledge to ‘build that wall’ excited his core Republican voters, and Abbott is hoping to ride a similar wave of enthusiasm through next year’s gubernatorial campaign and perhaps a future White House bid. But we’ve seen this show before. Texas doesn’t need more miles of border wall. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to pay for this charade. All of us should be spared this rerun.

It often seems like at least 50% of identifying as MAGA is the yearning to wall out brown people. It is why they keep going back to the well that has run dry. The only effective wall still standing is the Great Wall of China, which took 200 years to build and cost far more than billions of dollars, more like hundreds of thousands of lives.

We suppose Trump is willing to pay any price, except he’s no longer in a position to do anything but cheerlead. Thankfully.
