Over the last three days, with the excerpts released from Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig’s book, “I Alone Can Fix It,” the events of January 6th become increasingly clear and one can responsibly speculate as to the framework and ultimate goal of a conspiracy, one planned within the White House.
It is premised upon a scenario in which they assume that Mike Pence would follow the Constitution and do his job to properly oversee the symbolic Constitutional requirement needed for Biden’s inauguration on January 20th.
The goal was to intimidate or go around Mike Pence in order to delay the confirmation to allow Trump-favored legislatures to “investigate” the election for ten days. Trump only needed three states overturned. But it all depended upon removing Mike Pence from the process or intimidate him enough to do Trump’s bidding. The riot gave the Secret Service the chance to remove Pence from the Senate due to the threat and hold him somewhere, “in order to keep in secure.”
During the riot the Secret Service did remove Pence from the situation, taking him to tunnels deep under the Capitol. They tried to get him into an SUV, driven by agents Pence did not know personally. Pence refused to get into the vehicle, probably sensing the plan. He simply refused and remained in the Capitol, where he could resume his duties.
The above is speculation, but it is responsible speculation given all we now know from reports as to what happened that day.
Last night, Representative Jaimie Haskin described just how easily Trump could have won if Pence had complied with Trump’s plan, throwing the nation into chaos. It is possible that had Pence gone in the SUV, he would be threatened enough to go along with the plan. We don’t know. But Raskin described the ease with which Trump would have won had Pence followed Trump’s instructions. From Mediaite:
All they wanted Pence to do was to rebuff the electors coming in from Arizona, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, lowering Biden’s total to below 270, kicking the presidential contest into a contingent election [in the House]. And there they wanted it because we vote not one member, one vote, but one state, one vote.
And if they’d been able to do that, which would not have been really that much if you look at the different things Mike Pence did over the prior four years for Trump, they would have won it with 27 states to 22 for the Democrats and one tied. And at that point he probably would’ve followed the advice of Michael Flynn and imposed martial law and a state of siege, and this would’ve been the Reichstag moment.
It all depended upon Pence. The riot seems planned to intimidate Pence and either threaten him into changing his mind, or just physically remove him from the situation “for his protection,” and thus unable to perform his constitutional duty.
We would have lost democracy in the United States and Trump would have become a de facto dictator. We speculate that January 6th was planned to change one man’s actions. It all came down to Pence and his choice to not get in the SUV, likely sensing the January 6th plan ahead of time. This is now responsible speculation.
I joined @allinwithchris tonight to discuss January 6, our narrow escape from a “Reichstag moment,” and how the insurrection was not the end of something but the beginning of something: a wave of domestic violent extremism we must confront seriously and immediately. pic.twitter.com/uJMLmT2dsf
