According to the Daytona News-Journal, federal prosecutors have charged Joseph R. Biggs, 37, as a “leader among the Proud Boys in planning “an organized and violent attack” during the January 6th riot. He is one of the few that are held in jail awaiting trial. (It is important to always remember, a “few,” not a majority).
They are deemed too dangerous to be out in society while they wait.
The newspaper reports that, according to Biggs’ attorney, J. Daniel Hull, Biggs is increasingly in danger:
“Word that Biggs is locked up in a subsection of the Seminole County Jail, which holds about 150 federal inmates in other cases, has been getting around. I do worry about somebody wanting to test Joe Biggs’ mettle. I think that’s going to be coming up more and more.'”
We have no idea what “test his mettle” means in this context. It is very vague. It is also best to keep in mind that it’s every defense attorney’s job to get her/his client out and in the best situation possible. Practically every attorney for a defendant awaiting trial looks for ways to get the client out on bond.
The “test his mettle” thing most likely has something to do with this:
The Proud Boys are a self-described “Western Chauvinist” organization that experts have warned are linked to white supremacy, and are infamous for their street brawls.
And:
Hull said that on May 21, Biggs was threatened by a couple of gang members being held at the Seminole County Jail. He said Biggs was then relocated to another part of the jail. “This was something that we were very concerned about,” Hull said.
Again, sometimes these threats are exaggerated to get a client out of jail, sometimes they are not.
Many in society like to joke about someone’s difficulties awaiting them in prison, and we all know the premise regarding what can happen. It is not a joke. None of it is a joke. We put the guilty in jail or prison in order to punish them. It is not acceptable to allow further punishment while incarcerated. All too often, guards – sympathetic to whatever side, will allow someone to be put in danger. It is simply unacceptable in a first-world country.
The racist nature of the Proud Boys and other MAGA supporters is going to present a danger in any situation when they are imprisoned. It just makes it that much more obvious that many in the MAGA movement are members more for the racism than the politics… to the extent they’re not one and the same.
