The CDC now lists twelve states as at the highest risk for COVID, especially the Delta variant that is far more contagious and impacts younger people, even children. Those states are, in no particular order, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and… Florida. The fact that, with the exception of Nevada (where people come from every state to congregate in one city), each state is a red one that voted for Trump won’t surprise anyone. We find it particularly telling that, while Mississippi, South Carolina, and Florida are listed, Georgia is not. Make of that what you will.

This is an intolerable situation from any number of perspectives, first and most obviously, it just causes more needless death. Despite the fact that at this point, the people dying are largely responsible for their own outcome, we still don’t wish anyone harm – ever. There is the economic impact. Many of these people are uninsured, which means the local hospitals absorb the cost. There is also a labor cost, with people missing work, and demand for goods going down. It is a slap in the face of all the scientists, doctors, techs, and government employees that worked 16 hour days to get the vaccine out as fast as possible. Last, and most terrifyingly, the more this virus is allowed to swing around the country, the more the virus will do what viruses do. It will continue to evolve, perhaps into a form that defeats the vaccine, putting us through the entire ordeal again.
