As we watched January 6th transpire live on television, we suspect more than a few of us leaned over to our kids – at least our young teens – and said, “Watch closely, this is your 9-11, and it’s happening right now.” As so many of us watched, we surely told our children, “This changes everything.”
Little did we know.
We were certain that we were witnessing the ultimate and predictable end of Trumpism and the MAGA movement. The country would finally wake up to the horrors of which these people were capable and the danger they posed to the country and its Constitution, which had already been battered for four years. In the days that followed, we saw every indication that we were right. Republican after Republican came out and denounced Trump, McCarthy, McConnell, and the social media platforms. It seemed like the door had slammed.
Again, little did we know. The MAGA-GOP-FOX-“Possible Russia element” whitewash was and is so effective that it is not even the end of June and not only is the MAGA movement still together, not only does Trump still control Congress, but the majority of Republicans blame Biden and the Democrats for January 6th, more so than Trump supporters. From Mediaite, discussing the Morning Consult Poll:
GOP voters are now more likely to blame President Joe Biden and Democrats in Congress for the events that led to the Capitol siege than they are Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers.
The overall electorate has become more likely to say the Capitol rioters represent the Republican Party.
Among GOP voters, 68% say “there has been too much focus on the January 6th events,” while 50% of all voters disagree.
And a quote from Amy Fried, chair of the PoliSci Department at the University of Maine:
“What’s happening isn’t partisan polarization but asymmetric polarization, with Republicans, separated from Democrats and independents on everything from whether the 2020 election results were legitimate, to assessments of how Trump handled and Biden is handling COVID, to views about how the economy is doing.”
None one reading this has any doubt, January 6th was the Zoomer generation’s 9-11. The only problem is that the extremists responsible for January 6th have 40% of the United States as sympathizers.
